Triveni 5 MW Back-Pressure Turbine — Full Overhaul & Rotor Balance
Scope of Work
Complete turnkey overhaul: rotor removal, bearing replacement, labyrinth seal machining, rotor dynamic balancing (ISO 1940 G2.5), lube oil flushing, and commissioning.
The Challenge
The turbine had been running with elevated vibration (>6 mm/s) for two seasons. Bearing housings showed fretting wear and the rotor had a persistent 1× runout that previous maintenance had not resolved.
Our Solution
Ex-Triveni OEM engineers disassembled the unit and found a cracked journal on the drive end. The journal was machined undersized, new Babbitt poured and scraped, labyrinths machined in our workshop, and the rotor dynamically balanced to <0.5 g·mm residual imbalance. Post-commissioning vibration: 1.8 mm/s.
Measured Outcomes
- Vibration reduced from 6.4 mm/s to 1.8 mm/s
- Bearing metal temperature dropped by 14 °C
- Turbine returned to service within the planned 12-day window
- No unplanned trips in the subsequent 12-month operating season
